Gallia County has a wonderfully relaxed sense of place. Wooded ridges, family farms, ponds and winding roads eventually bring you to the broad Ohio River, with Gallipolis sitting right along the water. Our favorite place to begin or end a Gallia County outing is Gallipolis City Park. Grab one of the bench swings overlooking the Ohio River, admire the historic bandstand and give yourself a few quiet minutes to watch the water go by. From there, downtown food and culture are an easy walk. Courtside Bar & Grille is a lively local stop for burgers, sandwiches and a relaxed meal. For an evening out, check the calendars at the French Art Colony and the restored Ariel Opera House. We especially love how Gallipolis can feel peaceful and cultured at the same time - river town on one block, live music and art on the next.

Gallia County also makes it easy to add some mud-on-your-boots fun. Raccoon Creek County Park spreads across 700 acres in the southeastern Ohio foothills and is open for hiking, picnicking, nature study and wildlife watching. Near Rio Grande, the Gatewood Trail System offers about 15 miles of volunteer-maintained singletrack for hiking and mountain biking. If fishing is more your speed, Tycoon Lake Wildlife Area has shoreline access, a fishing pier and a boat ramp, with lily-pad coves that give the lake a quiet, tucked-away feel.

Hunters and serious public-land explorers can look to Crown City Wildlife Area and the Wayne National Forest's Morgan Sisters-Symmes Creek trails. Use current agency maps because Crown City extends into neighboring Lawrence County and public boundaries matter. Boaters can also find public access to the Ohio River near Gallipolis. It is a working commercial river with current and large-vessel traffic, so it deserves more preparation than a quiet lake outing.

If your schedule allows, make the short drive to Rio Grande for the Bob Evans Farm, a Gallia County landmark that comes alive during its fall farm festival. We also enjoy the treasure-hunt energy of the French 500 Flea Market and Craft Show, with its antiques, plants, handmade pieces and wonderfully unpredictable finds. Add the Gallia County Junior Fair and the River Recreation Festival, and there is a good chance something fun will be happening whenever you return.
